Wild Camping On High Stile Ridge, Lake District

Setting off from Honister Slate mine, the walk is relatively straight forward towards High Stile ridge, above Buttermere and Crummock Water. Taking the path up the side of the Slate mine brings you out with paths leading to either Fleetwith Pike, Great Gable, or Haystacks. Choosing the latter, will take you past Black Beck Tarn, and up onto Haystacks – from which you will have fantastic views. Next, dropping down to Scarth Gap Pass, back up onto Seat and then High Crag. From there onwards, you can follow the High Stile ridge all the way to Red Pike and back to Buttermere; which is a popular day route. We chose to camp at the summit of High Crag.
